THEME
The theme of the Congress is "Changes in Aesthetics". Discussion will cover the theories of philosophy of art, including criticism and praxis. The changes in practice and theory of art are of the utmost importance for the study of aesthetics throughout the history and philosophy of art. One of the basic concepts in the evolution of western art aesthetics may be understood as the keynote of Changes in Aesthetics. We will, therefore, concentrate on the problems of contemporary art and aesthetics. Emphasis will be given to the practice and theories relating to the extension of contemporary aesthetics, including anthropology, sociology, ecology, fashion, semiotics, art education, folklore, psychoanalysis, technology, and other areas of knowledge. We wish to emphasize the aesthetics of cultural diversity and its relationship to history as well as to criticism and everyday life. Lastly, it endeavours to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences in aesthetics to achieve a closer relationship between eastern and western cultures.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATIONS
THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR AESTHETICS, IAA, is a community of aestheticians which has institutionally existed for almost a century. The history of IAA begins as a history of international congresses. Its aim is to give institutional recognition to aesthetics as a field of humanistic knowledge, to encourage and promote inquiry into aesthetics, and to disseminate its findings by publishing the IAA Newsletter, the IAA Yearbook and organising international congresses. The first was organised by Max Dessoir in Berlin in 1918 and the three last were: (1995) Finland, (1998) Slovenia, (2001) Japan which was attended by 600 participants from 30 countries. In 2007 the IAA XVII International Congress of Aesthetics will be held in Turkey.
Professor Dr. Ken-ichi Sasaki is the President of IAA.
THE BRAZILIAN SOCIETY OF AESTHETICS, ABRE is a member of the International Association for Aesthetics, IAA. When founded in 1988 during the 11th IAA International Congress of Aesthetics at Nottingham University, England, it was first called Latin American Association for Aesthetics, AEAL. In 1997 its name was changed to Brazilian Association of Aesthetics, ABRE. The purpose of ABRE is to create a study and research centre on the philosophy of art and aesthetics. To mantain a permanent forum for discussion. To further the exchange of philosophical ideas between Brazilians and foreigners through meetings at congresses, seminars and colloquies. In 1997, ABRE (then AEAL) successfully held the II Latin American Colloquy of Aesthetics – Aesthetics in Question – at the Rio de Janeiro State University, which attracted 300 delegates. The opening speeach was given by Arnold Berleant, then the president of IAA. This was the starting point for ABRE to become a wider known association and the outcome was an increase in the number of members of ABRE and IAA. We hope that this will also happen in 2004 with the XVI International Congress of Aesthetics.
Professor Dr. Nilza de Oliveira is the President of ABRE.
The cover drawing was done by Elena P.Castelo, a 6 year old Brazilian girl. With approval, the Executive Committee apropriated it as an anthropological symbol of creation for the XVI International Congress of Aesthetics . The designers of all printed matter for the Congress are: Luciana Gelli and André Gelli.
